The people of March wanted to build a church near the Market Place. The Devil, believing the Fens belonged to him, pulled down every night what had been built during the day.
The villagers erected a Cross to drive the Devil away. Upon seeing the holy sign, the Devil fled, and the church was built. The base of this cross can still be seen on the road leading to St Wendreda’s.
