The Black Shuck of the Fens

The belief in Shucky Dogs (Black Shuck) persisted here until the early 20th century. An invisible presence would be felt, chains rattled, or heavy breathing heard.

One specific Shuck was said to be the ghost of a black dog whose master drowned near the riverbank. The dog roamed the road between Littleport and Brandon Creek.

The End of the Haunt (1906): A man driving a motorcar in the fog crashed into “something” on the road. He landed off the road with his front wheel on the exact spot where the dog’s master had drowned a century before. The animal was never heard of again—the only known case of a phantom dog being run over by a car.
