On Abington Church Farm is or was a meadow known as Sunken Church Field. Local tradition says that there was once a church or chapel there, which fell into ruins and in the course of time became buried. It was said that at times the church bells could be heard ringing underground, and if you knelt with your ear pressed to the grass on a moonlit night you would hear a ghostly choice singing. ‘Few villagers’, says Enid Porter recording this story in the 1960s, ‘dared to go after dark into Sunken Church Field.’ She gives no date for the story, but it may be an old one, as there are similar traditions of Sunken Churches throughout Britain.
