Underlaid Wood

Underlaid Wood

In Underlaid Wood, between Hazleslack and Beetham, are the Fairy Steps. These are stone steps cut into the precipice of Whin Scar. It is said that a wish made at the bottom will be granted by the fairies if you can climb the narrow staircase without touching its sides. Country people with the second sight claim to be able to see fairies running up and down the steps.
