Melcombe Horsey

Melcombe Horsey

Legend has it that a giant is buried here - at the location of an large rectangular mound of unknown date and origin.  There are two large boulders nearby and the story goes that there was once two rival giants who challenged one another to a stone-throwing contest.  They both stood on Norden Hill and aimed for Hanging Hill a whole mile away across the valley.  Neither one of them could make the throw and hit the target, but one got his a few yards closer and so claimed victory.  The loser, so bereft, died right there on the spot and was buried.  The boulders are said to move when they hear the cocks crowing at Cheselbourne.
