Cow Castle

Cow Castle

An isolated ancient Iron Age hillfort that is along a 7 mile circular walk, Cow Castle is listed as a scheduled ancient monument.  It rests atop a knoll in a tucked-away bend of the river Barle almost where it joins up with the White Water.  Perhaps because it was small, perhaps because it was remote, it was told locally in the 19th century that it was built by fairies in order to protect themselves from the earth spirits that lived nearby.
