Chapel o'Sink

Chapel o' Sink

Leslie Grinsell relates of this prehistoric site that 'In early days an attempt was made to build a chapel within the stone circle, but... each night the walls sank out of sight, and the building began anew every morning, until eventually the unlucky work was abandoned in despair.' Similar traditions are connected with certain stone circles known locally as "Sunken Kirk" in the Border regions.

Other churches were said to have been swallowed up by the earth not only while they were being built, but with all the congregation inside. The parishioners of St. Vigeans feared such a fate, but were spared.
